A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
