The Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
