Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
